Fall Registration opens for Residents on Thursday, September 6 and begins for Non-Residents on Tuesday, September 11. Please note there are some Early Fall sports programs at McAvoy Park that registration is already open for.

Register early and often so your programs do not get cancelled! Programs that have not met their minimum may be cancelled one week prior to the program start date.

    Rainbow Ribbons: Aesthetic Group Gymnastics (Ages 4-10)
    Aesthetic Group Gymnastics is relatively new to the U.S. and brought to us by a rhythmic gymnast who has competed all around the world. The Rainbow Ribbons program is non-competitive, allowing children to explore the combined graceful art of music, dance, and gymnastics in a supervised, fun setting. The children will learn how to work and trust each other as a team in a pleasant, upbeat setting while they learn artistic routines. Equipment includes scarves, ball, hoops, and ropes. Children will learn the basics of core strength, flexibility, balance, coordination and rhythm. They will also learn body waves, swings, ballet, gymnastic jumps and leaps, and dance steps.

    This thirty-minute class will introduce young boys and girls to music and dance while exploring movement and basic dance steps in a fun, creative way.     4227 - Intro Tap & Technique

    Introduction to Beginner Tap and Technique (Ages 4-9)
    This class is for students who haven’t tried tap yet, but who may be interested. Maybe they’ve seen a tap routine on television, or maybe they like the sound of the shoes. This class will help them with musicality, basic dance skill, and beginner tap sounds, movements and steps. Dancers will develop a brief routine to perform at the end of the four week session with the help of a teacher. Dancers should dress comfortably and tap shoes are recommended. A limited number of extra tap shoes are available at the studio for those students who don’t have them.

    This course is designed to teach children the importance of behaving responsibly and how to handle themselves when confronted with challenges while home alone. Topics include but are not limited to, first aid, what to do when a stranger comes to the door, telephone tips, Internet safety as well as how to react during a variety of miscellaneous emergencies such as a power outage. Also covered will be who and when to call in an emergency. Knowing when your child is ready to stay home alone is a difficult decision; preparation can make the transition much easier for you and your child.

    Skating 101 (All Ages)
    This is the entry-level program for anyone looking to play ice hockey, figure skate, or who simply has a desire to master the skills of ice skating for recreational purposes. It is designed for beginners of all ages and is run by professionally trained ice hockey and figure skating instructional staff. Rental skates are provided at no cost, if needed; and each class is broken up by age and skill levels, creating a safe and enjoyable skating experience for all participants. Each class is broken into two 25-minute segments - one dedicated for on-ice lessons and one dedicated to practice time where participants get an opportunity to work on the learned skills. Please bring a bike/hockey helmet for safety.

    Hockey 101 is the Step #1 of the Iceplex Learn to Play Hockey Programs. This program is designed with an emphasis on having fun and creating a positive and comfortable learning atmosphere. The goal of Hockey 101 is to introduce participants to the game of ice hockey. Participants will gear up in full equipment for the first time, taking the ice as a real hockey player! H101 focuses solely on phase 1 hockey skills; skating, early stick handling, and shooting techniques. This into to the game of hockey will allow skaters an opportunity to test the waters and see if they enjoy the fastest game on earth! Full equipment is required (Helmet with face guard, shoulder pads, elbow pads, shin pads, hockey pants, skates, jersey, socks, gloves and a stick).     Calling all Mini Musketeers: come play pirate and other fun games in this safe introduction to the sport of fencing. Start with warm up, obstacle courses, and skill building activities to develop focus, agility, balance, and hand/eye coordination. Games are used to teach the basic footwork and arm action. Children experience the thrill of sword play in the context of a structured class and build self-confidence using specialized plastic foils, chest plates and masks.     5077 - Beg. Hip Hop Fitness&Dance

    Adult Beginner Hip Hop Fitness and Dance (Ages 17+)
    A class focused on teaching beginner hip hop moves and building cardio endurance. Dancers incorporate the pop and lock and groove and bounce and other hip hop style steps into a brief routine, while working on fitness and rhythm and flexibility. Dancers should come wearing comfortable clothing; hair pulled back, and will dance either barefoot or in shoes that have not been worn outside. At the end of the 6 week session, dancers will have a brief routine completed.

    5078 - Adult Beginner Clogging

    Adult Beginner Clogging (Ages 17 +)
    This percussive dance form originated in the Appalachian Mountains in the time of early settlers. It has since gained popularity across the United States and around the globe, due in part to it’s features on shows like Americas Got Talent! Clogging combines elements of tap, Irish, Canadian step dancing, and hip hop. Clogging can be a lot like square dancing and is easy to pick up even if you have two left feet! Please bring clogging shoes, if you do not have a pair a limited amount are available at the studio to use.

    Presented by Lifespan of Greater Rochester, this is a falls prevention program to assist older adults to reduce their pain, stiffness, decreased range of motion, balance concerns associated with arthritis, and to promote fun, social means of increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Focus on weight transference, imagining resistance, slow-non-stop movement, upright posture, loosening the joints, and focusing on movement (being in the present, concentrating on breathing from diaphragm to promote calm and peace.)

    Motion Promotion (Ages 50+)
    A seated exercise class-perfect for all ability levels!
    This class will help to build stamina and muscle strength through exercises done while sitting in a chair. You’ll work on improving your range of motion, joint health and cardio respiratory circulation while exercising to contemporary, easy listening music. This class is taught in a “go at your own pace” setting and is appropriate for individuals with chronic pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, mobility limitations, etc. Insurance discounts may be available-check with your insurance provider.     Falls Prevention Seminar
    One-third of all people over the age of 65 and half of all seniors over the age of 80 fall every year, resulting in serious and debilitating injuries. The HCR Falls Prevention seminar can dramatically reduce your risk of falling and any subsequent injuries. This seminar will be led by APTA Board Certified Geriatric Certified Specialists, and will help you develop a personalized plan to reduce risks, improve balance, and strengthen mobility, helping you to remain safely at home longer. Even though there is no cost for this seminar you must still register for the program.

    Brain Training 2
    Continue to learn grow your brain or start your journey on how to keep your brain young. In this 2nd series, participants will learn about the topics not covered in the 1st series. Participants will be provided with an explanation and over view of the science supporting the importance of brain fitness, engaging activities of how to improve thinking and explore effective memory strategies. Topics covered: Brief Overview/foundation, Mobility, Smell and How to learn healthy habits to improve quality of life at any age.
    The instructor, France McCloskey, has an MA in Adult Learning, BA in Cognitive Science/Psychology and is an Adult Educator with RCSD and appointed Adjunct Instructor with MCC, Education and Human Services Department. She will include resources for participants to practice a healthy brain lifestyle at home and in the community.
